Surviving the Haunted House: Tips and Tricks for Navigating the Terror

Surviving the Haunted House: Tips and Tricks for Navigating the Terror

As the leaves turn golden and a chill fills the air, the Halloween season beckons thrill-seekers to embark on spine-tingling adventures. One such adventure is visiting a haunted house—a labyrinth of darkness, scares, and suspense. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a first-time visitor, surviving a haunted house requires a mix of courage, strategy, and composure. In this blog, we will equip you with essential tips and tricks to help you navigate the terror and emerge victorious from the eerie depths of a haunted house.

  1. Choose the Right Haunted House: Not all haunted houses are created equal. Before you venture into the realm of fright, do some research to find a haunted house that suits your preferences and scare tolerance. Some establishments offer mild scares suitable for families, while others cater to hardcore horror enthusiasts. Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information to ensure you select a haunted house that matches your expectations.

  2. Prepare Mentally and Emotionally: Entering a haunted house can be an intense experience, triggering fear and anxiety. Prepare yourself mentally and emotionally by reminding yourself that it's all in good fun and that the scares are carefully designed. Adopt a positive mindset, embrace the adrenaline rush, and focus on enjoying the thrill rather than succumbing to fear.

  3. Go in a Group: Bravery is contagious, and facing the unknown is easier when you have companions by your side. Gather a group of friends or family members to explore the haunted house together. Not only will this provide you with a sense of security, but it will also enhance the overall experience as you share the scares, laughter, and moments of relief.

  4. Follow the Rules: Haunted houses have rules for a reason. Pay attention to the instructions given by the staff before entering. These rules are designed to ensure the safety of both visitors and actors. Keep in mind that touching the actors is typically not allowed, and they will not touch you either. Respect the boundaries, and you'll have a more enjoyable and stress-free experience.

  5. Stay Calm and Composed: In a haunted house, surprises lurk around every corner. Actors will jump out, creepy sounds will echo through the halls, and unexpected things may occur. It's crucial to remain calm and composed. Take deep breaths, remind yourself that it's all part of the experience, and resist the urge to panic or run. Maintaining composure will help you navigate through the scares and enjoy the atmosphere.

  6. Pay Attention to Lighting and Sound Cues: Haunted houses are designed to play with your senses. Pay close attention to lighting and sound cues as they often indicate impending scares or point you in the right direction. Flashing lights, sudden darkness, or eerie sounds may guide you toward the exit or indicate that something is about to happen. Being observant can help you anticipate scares and stay one step ahead.

  7. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: While it's essential to pay attention to the scares, don't forget to be mindful of your physical surroundings as well. Haunted houses are intentionally designed to disorient visitors, so be cautious of obstacles, low-hanging props, or uneven surfaces. By staying aware of your environment, you can avoid tripping or colliding with objects, ensuring a safe journey through the haunted house.

Conclusion: Surviving a haunted house is an exhilarating experience that requires a combination of courage, strategy, and composure. By choosing the right haunted house, preparing mentally, going with a group, following the rules, and staying calm and observant, you can navigate the terror and emerge victorious from the darkness. So, gather your courage, embrace the adrenaline, and embark on an unforgettable journey!

Why A Haunted House Experience Can Be Intense

Why A Haunted House Experience Can Be Intense

A haunted house experience can be intense for several reasons:

Atmosphere: Haunted houses are designed to create a spooky and eerie atmosphere. They often feature dim lighting, fog, unsettling sounds, and creepy decorations. This environment sets the stage for an intense experience by immediately putting participants on edge and heightening their senses. At Milburn's Haunted Manor, atmosphere is key for the experience.

Uncertainty: In a haunted house, participants enter an unfamiliar environment where they have limited control over what will happen next. The element of surprise and uncertainty can trigger the fight-or-flight response, leading to heightened adrenaline and a sense of intensity. At  Milburn's Haunted Manor, we allow space and time between groups who are going through the haunted house. This enhances the elements of uncertainty as they do not have others in front of them to give away the scare.

Psychological manipulation: Haunted house designers often employ various psychological techniques to evoke fear and intensity. They may use jump scares, sudden noises, strobe lights, and other sensory triggers to startle participants. Additionally, the use of claustrophobic spaces, disorienting mazes, or distorted visuals can further heighten the intensity of the experience.

Immersion: A well-designed haunted house aims to immerse participants in a narrative or story. By creating a believable and immersive environment, participants may suspend their disbelief and become more emotionally invested in the experience. This deepens the intensity as they feel more connected to the fictional world and its potential dangers. Milburn's Haunted Manor is a total immersion experience.

Peer influence: Going through a haunted house with a group of friends or strangers can amplify the intensity. People tend to react to fear contagiously, meaning that if one person in the group gets scared or startled, it can trigger a chain reaction, increasing the overall intensity and making the experience more memorable.

1) The Manor

WHY IS OUR MILBURN MANOR HAUNTED HOUSE HAUNTED?

People always said that little little Suzie wasn't quite right, a little odd...unfortunately for Suzie's parents their suspicions were correct.

But time has passed...none now remember the Manor's dark secret and history has faded to fable.

In the Fall of 1927 the small quiet town of Hubbard Oregon was shocked with its first double homicide, suicide. The police recorded that the daughter of Ida and Wilhelm Milburn viciously murdered and dismembered her parents in the night before hanging herself in the parlor. The extent of the heinous crime was so brutal that the Milburn Manor was boarded up and left to rot. No one wanted to purchase the estate for fear of the evil that lingers there.

Rumors of lights seen within the rotting manor have begun to stir once more. Some say that the tormented spirit of little Suzie has come home. That she wanders the dark halls of the old Milburn Manor, cursed to relive the horrors of that fated Fall night.

2) The Dark

EXPERIENCE THE DARK

Enter the dark if you dare. As the name implies be prepared to wander in areas of complete darkness where only ghouls and zombies can see and hide.…

Nothing can prepare you for the experience of The Dark at Milburn's Haunted Manor… One of Oregon’s premiere Haunted House attractions.

The Dark offers a total immersion experience.  If you are afraid of the dark or are at all claustrophobic, The Dark will have you screaming for more.

The Dark is one of two attractions that we offer at Milburn’s. The Dark is very different form the Haunted Manor.  Where the Manor follows rules of logic in laying out a haunted house…The Dark is not constrained to those ideals.  In a classic style haunted house like the Haunted Manor, there needs to be a visual continuity consistent with an old house…a bedroom, bathroom, living room etc.  And of course the inhabitants of such a place need to be relative to the surroundings.

Well, in The Dark we have the luxury of ignoring any such rules.  As this haunt is encased in complete darkness… we can attack with any manor of monster from any themed room.  Zombies, clowns, vampires or dinosaurs…you’ll never guess what is next.  From one chamber to the next you will never know what will jump out of The Dark to get you.
“Visually intense!” “Startling effects!” “There is no place to hide!”
Are you afraid of the dark…Don’t worry, we will make sure you are not… alone.

Little Suzie One Eye's Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin patches come in all sizes and shapes on Halloween. At Milburn's Manor Haunted Manor, our pumpkin patch is also haunted.

But maybe not in the same way as you might expect.

Some haunted things are seen, and others unseen. Then there is that gray area in between.

You never know what is watching you or hiding nearby.

If it is Little Suzie One Eye, you might even hear a faint cry.

Welcome to the pumpkin patch at Milburn's Haunted Manor. It really belongs to Suzie, we are just the caretakers.

Some facts about Suzie's Haunted Pumpkin Patch
The Patch is only open when the haunted house is open.

We are the only nighttime pumpkin patch or as we like to call it "moonlit pumpkin patch".

Go home with a pumpkin to carve after a night of screaming...great way to round out your Halloween experience.

Check out our "Family Nights" for discounted tickets that include a pumpkin of your choice from our patch.

Watch out for Suzie. She has been known to be seen in the Pumpkin Patch.

But don't wait until Halloween.  Stay tuned on Facebook for new posts as we get closer to our opening Oct 8th.

Milburn's Haunted Manor:
A Portland Haunted House Alternative

Portland Haunted House Secret Revealed

In Portland, Oregon there are many choices for haunted houses, attractions and events. Travel Portland recently published a full article on this  "Haunted Portland -
Explore Portland's paranormal side with these spooky spots and spirited tours."

The secret haunted house was not revealed in the article. "Haunted Portland"

They did cover some interesting topics such as "McMenamin’s White Eagle Saloon claims to play host to several apparitions, from a prostitute named Rose to the souls of unwitting residents kidnapped via Portland’s infamous Shanghai Tunnels."  Or Old Town Pizza with a ghost named "Nina" who died at the bottom of a dark elevator shaft. Or - the Lone Fir Cemetery- the final resting place for 25,000 souls — believer or not, that’s pretty good odds for spirit-spotting and ghost stories."

The article goes on the describe various Halloween events in and around Portland, but the secret haunted house was not revealed in this section either.
https://www.travelportland.com/events/halloween/

So what is the secret about a Portland Haunted house?

First, it is not exactly within Portland city limits.....depending on where you start it is about the same distance from Tigard to PDX airport..... except that it is South of Portland, located in Hubbard.

Second, it is featured in websites such as Portland Haunted Houses and Oregon Haunted Houses.

Third, the secret is that it is a unique haunted house unlike anything that is in Portland. It is Milburn's Haunted Manor and was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting as being one of Oregon's best haunted houses. View the OPB video on our home page"

How to Survive The Haunted House at Milburns Haunted Manor

  1. Choose a haunted house that has awards for their scary experience. Read about ours.

Chances are that you will survive an award winning haunted house. But consider this: Pregnant? heart condition etc? If this is you, you may want to consider letting your friends go while you stay out by concessions.  Have a deep fried snickers and enjoy the distant screams.

A Quick Stop at the Porta-Potties will Help a Dry Survival

  2. A quick stop at the porta-potties is a good idea.  Wetting yourself is sure to award you years of embarrassing stories told by your friends each and every Halloween season, or roller coaster ride, or just about anything to do with surprising someone.

Keep your eyes open – so you can avoid that wall, axe or zombie lunging at you

  3. Dress for battle!  Short skirts and stiletto heals are sure to let you down.  Large hoop ear rings may get a tug by a panicked friend.  Dress for comfort, warmth, and survival.  Keep your cell phone, wallet, debit card, etc. in a secure pocket.

Although running from a monster is always a good idea in the movies.  It is not recommended in a Haunted House attraction.

  4.  Do not turn and run head long through a dark haunt.  Many have tried and it rarely ends well.

Watch a lot of scary movies in the weeks ahead of your visit

  5.  we have some of the best in our top 100 scary movies blog

The use of flashlights is cheating. Plus it frightens the ghouls and only diminishes your experience. You might enjoy watching our video on the rules of Milburn Manor

  6. Here's the YouTube video on our blog  >

Don’t hug or hurt a ghoul or a zombie. Fight or flight.  Avoid both.  Do not slap, kick or punch the actors.  They are just trying to entertain you.

  7. Bring a friend or more – doing this alone is not as fun and survival rates are less

  8. Use safety in numbers.  But be selective in your choosing process.  Select at least one larger friend to use as a meat shield and at least one friend who is more of a coward than you to take the blunt of the ridicule after it is over.

Don’t hold back your screams if you are scared….

  9. Let yourself enjoy the thrill of the horror.  Like a roller coaster, throw your hands up and embrace the terror.  Trying not to get scared or being the "tough guy" is much less fun for both you and the actors.  Yes it is fake and you probably wont die.  But if you want your monies worth go "all in" and enjoy it.  Your group will have more fun and in turn so will you.Is a PG13 Haunt a Good Match for an 8 Year Old ?

  10.  Aside from the dangers of carrying a panic stricken, kicking and screaming child through endless attacks in the haunt...the nightmares at 1 AM are not worth it. Check the haunt rating.  A PG13 haunt is not a good match for an 8 year old. You will survive better by leaving the little ones at home.

After you have survived then what?

Deep fried carnival style foods at concessions is a great way to take the edge off after a panic packed experience.  Also a fun way to circle up and recount the adventures and the "fails" with your friends. Our Graveside Grill is famous for their fresh cut curly fries, deep fried snickers, zombie donuts and their signature "nail in the coffin", a deep fried bacon wrapped sausage dog.

Best Scary Movie in 2021?

Little Suzie One Eye's Scary Summer

A Quiet Place Part 2 Movie
description from Rotten Tomatoes movie website:
"The follow-up to the 2018 smash hit horror film, A Quiet Place Part II brings back Emily Blunt as she fights to keep her family alive in a world where creatures that hunt by listening are lurking everywhere. Cillian Murphy, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds also star, and John Krasinski returns as the film’s writer and director. A Quiet Place Part II retains the horror of its predecessor, but starts to raise the questions that post-apocalyptic entertainment often asks best: In the wake of earth-shattering catastrophes and unspeakable loss, how does a culture rebuild itself? Can a society find a new and better way to live? Or will we simply fall back on the old ways? In this strange period of reemergence — and in the first big theatrical hit of 2021 — that question couldn’t be more resonant.

Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path."

Reader Reviews

Reviews from readers on Amazon help to provide some ideas about the experience of reading this book. We hope that these are helpful.

"Fantastic story. For me, it's a must that a book grabs me from the start and doesn't let go. This book definitely fits the bill. Not only the story line, but the characters too. And the way they interact, not only with each other, but with the ghosts too. Very well written, keeps you guessing all the way through. Had a heck of a time putting down to get anything else done."

"
I absolutely love ghost stories. This is one of the best that I have read. Love the characters and how they were written. The plot was amazing and a twist you wont see coming. Really enjoyed this read. Give it a try, you wont be disappointed."
Great Page Turner
" really enjoyed The Haunting of Abram Mansion. The story hooked me from the beginning, and kept me reading with anticipation till the end. The characters were well written, very believable. Although I had an idea of how it might end, which character was the true villain, came as a surprise. Other than it kept me reading far to late into the night, I truly enjoyed it! Hope to read more of this author's work."

Two Goals for the Woodburn Boys Soccer Club

This summer Milburn's Haunted Manor, LLC. embarked on a community service project to give back to the Woodburn School district.

Each year the Woodburn Boys Soccer Club volunteers at our haunt and provide us the bulk of our actors and techs needed to operateour haunted attraction.

When visiting the school we noticed that a pair of soccer goals were in severe disrepair.

So we offered to break em down, take em home and refurbish them.

After receiving about $3500 worth of donated goods and services from 6 different companies and around 120 donated man hours, we were able to return the bight and shinny new goals back to the high school in time for the end of summer tournaments.

We  stripped em down to the base metal.  had them re-welded in some areas.  New hardware and a fresh coat of aircraft paint.

We truly appreciate the boys at the Woodburn soccer Club.  We're proud that they are State Champions.

They are certainly number one in our book.

We were happy to help them out and participate in this community service project.

The Woodburn Boys Soccer Club will be joining us again this year at Milburn's Haunted Manor, LLC.

Helping us add a little chill up our guests spine over the Halloween season.

Back for their third year with us and this year they are joined by the Woodburn Girls Soccer Club.

A portion of the ticket sales at Milburn's Haunted Manor, LLC. goes to supporting these clubs.
